Germany obviously came out of the war better than we had, in a way, and materially much more successful. And yet the people themselves looked still a bit dazed and they were desperately trying to put the past behind them and become once again a leading European country. I thought people were a little bit confused and slightly dejected, I remember thinking this wasn’t a particularly happy place.
